Christmas on the Costa del Sol 2026–27: Málaga lights, Christmas markets, kids' Christmas villages and Three Kings parades from Málaga to Sotogrande.

And it doesn't look much like the snowy scenes on Christmas cards. In December you might still be having lunch outside in a sweater, and once the sun goes down, the streets light up for the season. Here, Christmas means palm trees wrapped in lights, hot chocolate and churros on mild evenings, nativity scenes and zambombas, and, more and more, ice rinks and Santa's houses. Because the main gift-giving day in Spain is 6 January, the season also lasts longer than in northern Europe.

This guide brings together the Christmas events worth knowing about on this stretch of coast: lights, markets, children's Christmas villages, ballet, living nativity scenes and Three Kings parades. Events confirmed for 2026 show exact dates; for annual traditions, we have used last year's official dates and times and marked them as approximate.

Christmas week in Spain can vary slightly from one place to another. In addition to the national public holidays, some regions and municipalities have their own local holidays during the festive season, so the days off may differ depending on where you are staying.

Two Sundays are particularly easy to overlook: 27 December and 3 January. Both fall right in the middle of the holiday period, and many supermarkets on this part of the coast normally close on Sundays. It's safer to shop the day before.

Málaga Christmas lights on Calle Larios during the evening light-and-music show
Calle Larios turns into a tunnel of light every Christmas, with music shows each evening.

For many visitors, Christmas in Málaga starts on Calle Larios, the moment a huge canopy of lights switches on and the music begins. The Málaga Christmas lights are among the most famous in Spain, and in 2025 the city also projected a video-mapping show onto the cathedral.

💡 Good to know: the switch-on is traditionally on the last Friday of November (28 November in 2025). In 2025 the lights were on 18:30–00:00, until 02:00 at weekends and 06:00 on 24 and 31 December, with three shows each evening from 18:30 (none on 24 and 31 December). Arrive half an hour before a show, especially at weekends.

🕒 Dates and times are approximate: we took them from last year's official programme. They are often repeated, but may change for 2026, so please check the Málaga city council website before you go.

Santa arriving by boat at the port and children dragging tin cans to welcome San Nicolás in Estepona
On the Costa del Sol, Santa doesn't come by sleigh: he arrives by boat, welcomed by children with strings of tin cans.

On this coast, Christmas gift-bringers arrive by sea. In Málaga, Santa traditionally sails into Muelle Uno at the end of November to open Chocoland, his chocolate shop, where children can hand him their letters until early January (as in 2024 and 2025). In Estepona, it is San Nicolás, Saint Nicholas, who arrives by boat at the marina every 6 December, his feast day, at around 12:00. Children welcome him with the noise of their arrastre de latas, strings of tin cans dragged along the ground, and then walk with him to the Capilla del Carmen, where he collects their letters.

💡 Good to know: in Estepona, the arrival is organised by the Hermandad de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, and in 2024 the best tin-can string even won a prize. In 2026, 6 December falls on a Sunday.

10. Public Holidays and What's Open over Christmas 2026–27

Spain has fewer days off at Christmas than many visitors expect. Here is December 2026 and early January 2027 at a glance for Andalucía.

  • Public holidays: 7 December (Constitution Day, moved from Sunday 6 December), 8 December (Immaculate Conception), 25 December, 1 January and 6 January.
  • Short days: 24 and 31 December. Shops close early (Mercadona opened 9:00–19:00 in 2025), and many restaurants serve only set menus in the evening.
  • Not a holiday: 26 December, an ordinary working day in Spain. Watch out for the Sundays of 27 December and 3 January, in the middle of the holidays.

What's open over the holidays

  • Supermarkets: expect closures on 25 December and 1 January, as well as on most Sundays. On 24 and 31 December, supermarkets usually open in the morning and close earlier than normal. For a large food shop, 23 December is the safer option.
  • Restaurants: some open for lunch on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are different: restaurants that open often work with fixed menus. Reserve in advance.
  • Pharmacies: public holidays are covered by the farmacia de guardia system. Closed pharmacies normally display the address of the nearest duty pharmacy on the door.
  • Public transport: buses and trains continue to run, but reduced holiday timetables may apply.

Each town can also set two local holidays a year, so check the town hall's website if you plan official errands.

11. Weather in Málaga in December

Winter on the Costa del Sol is mild compared with northern Europe, but evenings can still feel cold. Málaga Airport gives a useful long-term reference for the western Costa del Sol. According to AEMET climate averages:

MonthAverage day / night temperatureRain and sunshine
December17.5 °C / 8.9 °C6.6 days with rain, 160 hours of sunshine
January16.8 °C / 7.4 °C5.8 days with rain, 180 hours of sunshine

On a sunny December afternoon, eating outside in a sweater is perfectly realistic. Once the sun goes down, though, temperatures drop quickly. Take a proper jacket if you're going to an evening parade, Christmas market or New Year's Eve celebration.

12. Our Tips for Christmas on the Costa del Sol

  • Reserve restaurants for 24, 25 and 31 December early. November is not too soon for popular places.
  • If possible, see the Málaga Christmas lights during the week rather than on a Friday or Saturday.
  • Do your main food shop before the busiest holiday dates. Remember that 27 December and 3 January are Sundays in 2026–27.
  • Try at least some of the seasonal sweets: turrón and polvorones in December, then roscón de Reyes in January.
  • Check whether your accommodation has proper heating. Sunny afternoons can be warm, but apartments cool down quickly at night in December.
  • If your travel dates are flexible, staying until 6 January gives you the chance to see the Three Kings celebrations.

13. Frequently Asked Questions about Christmas on the Costa del Sol

The switch-on traditionally takes place on the last Friday of November. In 2025 it was on 28 November. Three light-and-music shows then ran on Calle Larios each evening from 18:30, except on 24 and 31 December. The decorations stayed up into early January.

The traditional market is on Paseo del Parque, a short walk from Calle Larios, and normally runs from the start of December (1 December in 2025) until 7 January. Muelle Uno has another Christmas market by the port, while Marbella holds seasonal markets around Avenida del Mar and Parque de la Alameda.

Most are in or close to the town centre. In 2025, the main lights were switched on in Plaza Antonia Guerrero, the municipal nativity was in Plaza del Rocío, the Christmas park stood outside Teatro Auditorio Felipe VI, and the New Year's Eve celebration took place in Plaza del Reloj.

There is plenty, including many free events. Estepona usually has Santa's Christmas village and an ice rink or Christmas park. Sabinillas turns Parque del Duque into a children's Christmas village in late December, Benahavís and Torremolinos set up Christmas villages with rides and ice, and Sotogrande holds its marina tree-lighting with carols. On 5 January, almost every town has a Three Kings parade.

Most shops and supermarkets close on 25 December and 1 January. On 24 and 31 December, they generally close earlier than usual. Duty pharmacies remain available, and some restaurants open for Christmas Day lunch.

Usually mild, with plenty of sunny days. AEMET's long-term figures for Málaga Airport give an average December daytime temperature of 17.5 °C and a night-time average of 8.9 °C, with around six or seven days of rain during the month.

Yes. The Christmas tree in Sotogrande Marina is traditionally switched on on 6 December at 19:00 with carols, the Sunday market on Ribera del Marlin takes on a Christmas theme in December, The Beach at La Reserva Club welcomes Santa in mid-December, and there is a carol service in English. On 5 January, the nearby villages of Torreguadiaro, Guadiaro and San Enrique hold Three Kings parades.
