Three things worth knowing before you book
- At the very top end, the January price likely reflects next year's rate card — not a winter premium. Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande both quoted higher prices in January 2027 than in September 2026, but both clubs' booking systems already tag rates by season and year (rate codes like "2026" stepping up to "2027"). The most likely explanation is the standard annual increase every membership club applies when the new season's price list takes effect around January 1st — not a deliberate strategy of charging more specifically in winter.
- Mid-range, visitor-friendly clubs are genuinely cheaper in winter — and October is their real peak. Across four separate courses — La Reserva, Alto Club, La Hacienda Links, and San Roque Golf & Resort — the most expensive tee times of the entire year fell in late September or October, not summer and not Christmas. Winter (December–February) was consistently 15–35% cheaper than the October peak at these clubs.
- Some clubs barely move at all. The San Roque Club (Old Course) and La Hacienda Heathland kept nearly identical prices from summer through February, with San Roque only spiking in March.

5. Handicap Rules by Club
How a golf handicap in Spain works
An official Spanish handicap (Hándicap Exacto EGA, under the World Handicap System) requires a federative licence, issued either through the Real Federación Española de Golf (RFEG) or the regional federation for Andalusia — Real Federación Andaluza de Golf (RFGA). To get your first handicap as a new player, you typically need to submit scorecards from 54 completed holes (three 18-hole rounds or six 9-hole rounds) played on a recognised course; the club reviews and forwards the result to the federation. First handicaps for new players usually land between 36.0 and 54.0.
If you already hold a handicap abroad (from your home country's federation or golf club), Sotogrande's clubs will generally accept that certificate directly for booking purposes — you don't need to re-register in Spain for a single visit. What varies is the maximum handicap each club allows on its course.

6. Dress Code: What to Wear on Sotogrande's Courses
Golf dress codes in Sotogrande range from genuinely strict (Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande) to relaxed smart-casual (La Cañada, San Roque Golf & Resort). A few rules apply almost everywhere, and knowing them before you land saves an awkward conversation at the clubhouse.
The general rules that apply at nearly every club
- Men: collared polo shirt or golf-specific shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, golf shoes with soft (non-metal) spikes or clean trainers. No jeans, no vest tops, no football shorts.
- Women: collared or golf-specific top, tailored shorts, skirts, skorts or trousers, golf shoes or clean trainers. No swimwear, no beachwear, no denim at the stricter clubs.
- Footwear: soft spikes only — metal cleats are banned almost everywhere to protect the greens. Flip-flops and sandals are never allowed on the course, and are banned in several clubhouses too.
- Headwear: caps and visors are fine and genuinely useful — the winter sun is still strong at midday.
First time playing, or didn't bring golf clothes?
You don't need to own a full golf wardrobe to book a round in Sotogrande. Every course in this guide has a pro shop at the clubhouse that sells shirts, trousers, and shoes — useful if you're travelling light or came straight from the beach. A few practical options if you're arriving without gear:
- Buy at the clubhouse pro shop. All nine courses sell at least basic golf shirts and often full outfits; this is the simplest fix if you're short on time before your tee time.
- Improvise with what already passes. A plain collared polo shirt, chino shorts or trousers, and clean trainers will get you onto most of the mid-range and public courses (La Cañada, San Roque Golf & Resort, The Alto Club, La Hacienda) without issue — save your beach shorts and tank tops for the pool.
- Rent rather than buy. Several clubs rent golf shoes at the pro shop if yours have the wrong sole; ask when you book.
- Skip the strict clubs your first time out. If you're playing casually and didn't pack golf clothes, Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande enforce their dress code strictly at the door — better to save those two for a round where you're properly kitted out, and start at a more relaxed course like La Cañada or San Roque Golf & Resort.

But the courses themselves are far from quiet; member competitions run through the winter too, they're just smaller and rarely affect visitor access.
