When they get to Estepona or Sotogrande, people tend to think first about beaches. But after some time living there, you begin to notice that the coast actually feels better from the water than from the sand.
Some days, the surface of the ocean is entirely flat in the morning, and fishing boats leave the marina before most do. By midday the beaches get busy, but a few hundred meters offshore everything is quiet again.
There are some small stretches of coast near Manilva without restaurants, music, or big beach clubs. Just rocks, clear water, and occasionally a few anchored boats. The water in August will stay warm late into the evening.
Around Gibraltar you often see dolphins without actually searching. Most locals hardly turn their heads when they catch sight of the boats. Tourists still get excited every time.
What I enjoy most here is that boating does not seem too formal. Experience, fancy clothing, or a giant luxury yacht are not required. People rent small boats for a few hours, bring cold drinks, stop for a swim, and slowly move along the coast.
And quite frankly, a few nights out there last in your mind longer than expensive restaurants ever do. Especially when the sun is starting to drop behind Gibraltar and the whole sea turns dark orange for around 10 minutes before everything goes blue once more.

3 Best Boat Trip Routes From Sotogrande & Estepona
This stretch of coastline offers some of the most varied sailing in Europe β from two-hour dolphin trips to overnight voyages to Africa. Here are the three routes we recommend most.
Route 1
π¬ Dolphin Watching in the Strait of Gibraltar 2β4 hours Β· from La Duquesa or Estepona Port from β¬58/person or β¬210 for the boat
The most popular boat trip in the area. The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the world's top hotspots for wild dolphins and sperm whales. Sightings are virtually guaranteed on 90% of trips from May to September. Common, striped and bottlenose dolphins are resident year-round. Fin whales visit in JuneβAugust. Departures from La Duquesa (Manilva) or Estepona port. Swimming stops in hidden coves along the route.
Route 2
β΅Β Casares Mar Coast β Estepona to Sotogrande 4β8 hours Β· from Estepona Port or La Duquesa from β¬280β650 for the boat
A full-day route along the western Costa del Sol. From Estepona, head towards the secluded coves of Casares Mar β beaches that are completely inaccessible by road and only reachable by sea. Continue to Sotogrande marina and La Atunara bay. Perfect for snorkelling, swimming, and spotting the Rock of Gibraltar from the water. Ideal for families and groups of up to 9 people.
Route 3
π Gibraltar & Morocco β Multi-Day Voyage 1β2 days+Β from Sotogrande Marina from β¬800β1,500/day (skippered yacht)
Day 1: Sotogrande β Gibraltar (Ocean Village marina, the Rock, Barbary macaques) β overnight in the marina. Day 2: Gibraltar β Ceuta (Spanish enclave in Morocco) β Tangier, lunch in a Moroccan restaurant β return. Two continents, three countries β all in two days on the water. Organized by Yachting Sotogrande and Marbella Boat Charter.
π¬ Good to know: The dolphin watching route is perfect for first-timers and families with children. The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the world's busiest marine corridors β resident dolphin pods are here every day of the year.

Rental Conditions: License, Deposit & Cancellation
Before you book a boat near Sotogrande or Estepona you should really understand the boating regulations, deposits, and cancellation policies.
πͺͺ Boating license
To start with, if you are planning to rent a boat with an engine, like up to 15 hp. It is not too long like 5.3 m you will not need a license.
However, for more powerful boats like those over 6 m in length and with a big engine of 40 hp or more, you will need to have a special Spanish nautical qualification or an ICC or an RYA certificate to be able to rent the boat.
It is worth noting that some boats, like the Ofblue Quicksilver 505 and La Duquesa, do not require a license, which is really convenient.
β½οΈ Fuel policy
When it comes to fuel, the standard policy is usually that you get the boat with a tank and you have to return it with a full tank just like you got it.
However Ofblue includes the fuel cost in the price, so that is something to consider when you are booking a boat.
For example, if you rent a boat for 4 hours and it is not from Ofblue you can expect to use around β¬20β40 worth of fuel. You should always confirm this before you set off on your trip. π°
πΆ Security deposit
As for the security deposit it varies depending on the size of the boat:
- for boats that do not require a license, it is typically β¬200
- for bigger licensed boats between 6β8 m it is β¬500
- for really big yachts it can range from β¬1,000 to β¬3,000
The deposit is usually held on your card. Paid in cash, and it is returned after the boat has been inspected when you return it.
One thing to remember is to never pay a deposit before you have had a chance to inspect the boat at the water this is really important.
π« Cancellation policy
The cancellation policy also varies between companies, so you should always read the terms carefully.
If you are booking through a platform like SamBoat, GetMyBoat or BednBlue you can expect a 50% refund if you cancel at least two weeks in advance, but there is no refund if you cancel with less than two weeks' notice.
Ofblue and Yachting Sotogrande, on the other hand, typically require a 30β50% prepayment via WhatsApp, so you should be aware of this when you are booking.
π Age requirements
Additionally, there are age requirements to consider: if you have a license, you must be at least 18 years old to rent a boat, but for boats that do not require a license, the age requirement can vary, usually between 18 and 21 years old, so you should confirm the age requirements with the specific boat rental company when you are booking.
βοΈ Season & departure times
Finally, it is useful to know that the full season for boat rentals in this area runs from April to October, and the peak season is from June to September.
Understanding these boating regulations and policies will help ensure that your boat rental experience near Sotogrande or Estepona is smooth and enjoyable.
The departures typically are from 09:00 to 20:00. There are also sunset cruises from 18:00 to 21:00 as a separate option.
What to watch out for is that during the off-season from November to March there are 20β30% discounts, but there are boats available, so you should plan ahead.Β
π Safety equipment
All boats have safety equipment, like life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, first-aid kit and GPS.
There is a mandatory safety briefing before departure, which is really important for your safety.
What to watch out for is that if you rent a boat with a skipper, you do not need to have any experience, which is great for people who are new to boating.
